Town character

A history written in granite.

The town is named for the falls and giant granite boulders on Gunpowder Creek, where Andrew Baird built an iron works in 1791. A cotton mill and the railroad spurred growth, and the town incorporated in 1899. Granite Falls later earned national attention as the headquarters of the Bank of Granite, praised in Forbes, US Banker, and on CBS Evening News, and its downtown is listed on the National Register. It is also the hometown of country singer Eric Church.
